Custom Built Blog and New RSS 2.0 Feed

Custom Built Blog and New RSS 2.0 Feed
Posted in Misc

Many people have been asking me about the blogging software I've used in constructing my new website. While usually I vouch for Word Press, I decided to go custom. The blog you are reading, as well as the back end interface and all of its features are a custom creation. I decided to build it from scratch for several reasons.

Integration - While skinning can be fun at times, It can prove a difficult chore to completely integrate other's software into your own website. One example of this can be found on one of my latest projects - Softmod Depot. The news section and tutorial sections on this site are all backed by Word Press. Without a doubt, its works beautifully and makes for great features to the site. On the other hand, being that it is 3rd party software, there were many bugs to work out as well as some other minor issues to get things running smoothly.

Adding Features - This is another reason I decided to go custom. While the blog is somewhat basic at this stage and may continue so as long as it continues to serve its purpose, I will be able to add / remove features with great ease as I see fit. When using other developers software, you run into quite a few interesting issues. Obviously copyright restrictions can prevent you from making some necessary modifications. Apart from that though, working off of someone else's code is rarely fun. No matter how good they are or you are, the bottom line is, everyone codes differently. It's like art, no two people create the same. This can definitely increase the workload and time involved if your trying to modify other people's software. So there you have it, my two main reasons for building a custom blog. I have more, but you get the idea.

NEW FEATURE!!!! - So in the spirit of going custom, I had left out a very important part of any blog. A RSS Feed. Ooops! Well, its been fixed. Now, you can have a constant feed of the latest 15 posts on this blog. While there are only two at the moment, there will be many many more.

Stay tuned, thanks for reading, and as always, tell your friends.
